Drawing Animals with Lancelot Richardson

Lancelot Richardson

Join us for a weekend of learning to draw animals with tutor Lancelot Richardson, where you will learn about the fundamental principles of drawing a wide range of animals from photographic reference material and imagination. This comprehensive workshop is suitable for all levels of ability, from complete beginners who would like to start drawing animals to more experienced artists who need help with a particular subject.

This workshop is suitable for beginners to drawing as well as anyone else looking to get started with drawing animals specifically. All attendees will also receive a signed copy of Lance and Jake Spicer’s new book ‘You Will be Able to Draw Animals by the End of This Book’ as part of the course, RRP £17.99.

What to Expect

Day 1: We will be looking at how to draw the forms of different animal body layouts, looking at broad principles for building up structure. As the day progresses, there will be a simple introduction to tetrapod anatomy, looking at the overall body plan shared by mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Day 2: We will spend the morning on location at the Booth Museum drawing from their skeleton specimens and taxidermy under Lance’s support & instruction. After returning to the Draw studio for lunch, we will work on more developed studies and more individually tailored problem-solving.

What to Bring

All required materials will be provided for this workshop. However, it is recommended you bring a sketchbook for making notes and studies in if you prefer, and a plastic folder for taking away drawings. If you would like to draw from a particular subject we’d encourage you to bring photographic reference of the animals you’d like to draw. Easels, chairs, drawing boards and small tables are all provided.
