Questions about how Draw works? Please see our FAQ below...
No! We welcome everybody from complete beginners to experienced artists. If it is your very first time life drawing you might want to come to an untutored Mixed Pose life drawing class to see what it's all about - arrive ten minutes before the session and ask the Session Leader who will be happy to help you get started.
We run regular in-person workshops in introductions to life drawing and portrait drawing throughout the year which are suitable for complete novices. You can always find our tutored events by going to our timetable and selecting the 'tutored' event filter only. You are always welcome to email on info@draw-brighton.co.uk for more information.
You can turn up empty-handed but we encourage you to bring your own materials – some basic drawing materials will be available for free and paper can be purchased in the studio. Easels, padded & backed chairs, drawing boards and small tables are all provided on a first come-first served basis.
We usually recommend booking your place in advance to secure a spot, however all of our regular weekly sessions are drop-ins, which means you can turn up without pre-booking and pay by card at the end of the class (please note that we don't take cash.) We always recommend coming 5-15 minutes before the advertised start time to ensure you get a good spot.
Most of our weekend courses and workshops require pre-booking, so if you're unsure which sessions are drop-in, you can find them by clicking 'Drop-in' filter in the Timetable section of our website and you are always welcome to email on info@draw-brighton.co.uk for more information.

Draw set up a Patreon in 2020 during the first lockdown as a way to make sure our community could keep drawing through online life drawing sessions, tutorials and photo references. The Draw Patreon subsidises our in-person life classes for our Brighton community and funds all of our online sessions for our expanding international community - by signing up to support us through a monthly membership on the Draw Patreon, you become part of that community and get tiered access to a huge range of live & recorded online classes, photo-sets and tutorials. Take a look at our Patreon navigator site HERE for an overview of what we have on offer.

Printmaking is a natural extension of drawing, while drawing can be an end in itself, it is often a beginning and as you draw more you might start wondering how to take your drawings further. Printmaking provides a variety of ways to progress your image making, taking you beyond the practical exercises of life and portrait studies. Alongside relief and intaglio processes, Draw provides courses and access to Stone lithography, a form of printmaking categorised as an endangered craft by Heritage Crafts in 2021. There are few places in the south east providing access to this wonderfully sensitive printmaking process.
If you're new to printmaking or interested in developing your printmaking skills, you might like to check out Scarlett's Printmaking Courses, both online and in-person, which you can find on our timetable. We also sell at-home printmaking kits (which include access to accompanying tutorial videos) in the Draw Shop.
Zoom Print Club is an untutored online printmaking session where those with printmaking experience can work alongside each other in a shared zoom-studio. Scarlett will answer any printmaking questions, or address any printmaking troubleshooting problems you may have throughout the session and its a safe space to chat about your work, inspirations, and sharing your prints as they develop . Feel free to come to the session with your print questions for Scarlett. Scarlett runs these sessions from her home studio in Wales and you can find the latest dates on our online timetable.
Print Club at Draw was originally started in 2014 by artist Mary Martin. Mary studied printmaking at Brighton university and taught on the Draw atelier for several years. Mary is also responsible for many of the fantastic photographs of the drawing circus events.

In 2009 Jake Spicer set up ‘The Brighton Life Drawing Sessions’ - a weekly drop-in life class held in the corner of a small studio in New England House, Brighton, shared with a seamstress and the fledgling graphic design studio The Entente/Colophon. In 2011 Jake partnered with Shelley Morrow to create ‘Draw’ and expanded into a dedicated studio running daily life drawing classes. In 2020 we had to move our life classes online and now reach an international drawing community through our online life classes, online portrait sessions, tutorial videos and photo references. In 2021 we raised money for a new, larger studio in New England House, incorporating lithography facilities into the space and re-opening in-person sessions to run alongside our virtual programme. Our online community continues to grow across the globe and runs alongside our thriving, creative in-person studio in Brighton.

The Drawing Circus is a collective of life models, artists and tutors that run themed life drawing events in unusual locations around the UK. It was founded by Jake Spicer and Francesca Cluney and you can find out more about it here:
The Draw Atelier was established in 2012 and was a flexible year long course which fulfilled the need for structured, skills based drawing education in Brighton. Through discursive group sessions and artist-led tutorials the course created a supportive environment in which everybody was encouraged to learn and develop together, with life drawing at its heart. Each year we aimed to create a varied and supportive Atelier class with students of varied ages and backgrounds, united by a common interest in drawing and a desire to be part of the wider Draw community. The Atelier is currently on a hiatus, but please subscribe to our newsletter to be the first to hear of any Atelier news.
